MAKE BIO-DIGESTERS MANDATORY

MAKE BIO-DIGESTERS MANDATORY

Gone are the days where the septic tanks shall be cleaned by men, who risk their lives every time they get into it. Every time the septic tank gets filled, it has to be cleaned, when it’s done, it spreads stench, health hazards, contamination of ground level water, if the cleaning process has not been done properly it turns out to be a cause for epidemic outbreak and diseases. Mak India, Coimbatore has come out with manufacturing BIO-DIGESTER SEPTIC TANKS. Using this Bio-Digesters the above said problems wouldn’t be there as it totally eradicates them.  This is being used by Industries, households in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

In conventional toilets only 30% of the human waste is degraded and other 70% remains in the septic tank. In a Bio-Digester human waste up to 99.9% gets digested by Anaerobic Microbial inoculum, bacteria.  First, tank is filled up with the bacteria which converts the human wastes into gas and reusable water.  No bad odour comes out of the water and it can be used for agriculture and farming. This Bio-Digester Septic Tank (BDST) is totally enclosed where the input is human waste and the output will be water. What happens in between is, inoculum bacteria which is a research and findings of DRDO, made from cow dung is first dropped into the tank and then only it is given to customers, which lasts for 100 odd years. When human waste enters the first Bio-tank then it is consumed by the bacteria, then it dis-integrates the output into methane gas, carbon dioxide, and water. In the tank no 2 a small vent is given for the methane gas, which is the lightest of all gases to get dissolved into the atmosphere and its quantity in the air mixture is very less, does not affect the atmosphere at all. The next, Carbon dioxide by nature itself the heaviest gas, can’t come out and for that to stay inside there is no content of oxygen in the tank. Since the anaerobic bacteria cannot be converted into oxygen it can only multiply or increase in quantity and stays there.  It is a single tank with three compartments.

In India Railway trains toilets have been fitted with these Bio Septic tanks, which can be fit into households too. It needs only smaller space while compared to the normal man made, conventional septic tanks. It does not need electricity, fuel to operate it. It is less expensive and easy to maintain it too. The water which comes as the output is very pure, but on the possibility that it might have e-coli which can be treated is generally not advocated. DRDO, also suggests that it need not be consumed for drinking purposes, but for agriculture and farming only. Cities like Chennai and Coimbatore, where the water usage for toilet purposes is in huge quantities, these water can be treated. Such treated water can be filled in an open tank, lake, where they will be exposed to sunlight which would further kill the bacteria naturally and purifies it, which can be drank from the tank directly. But this is not suggested, as people would be averse to drinking such water. But in the process what happens is that, it increases the ground level water, which can be re-harvested as we do for rainwater, water will be saved and it can be used for all future purposes.

This water can be used for industrial purposes. This water when treated again and for safety purposes adding chlorine to it, can be used for drinking and every other way possible to use. The point here to be noted is, these human waste converter bacteria which is made from cow dung is very harmless, when deposited into the tank multiplies and remains there for ages. This technology has been researched and recognised by DRDO, and the BDSTs are manufactured as per their specifications by MAK India.

In a household consisting of 8 to 10 people, to erect, install this tank would cost only Rs.32000/- whereas when the same is done by a contractor it would cost around Rs.40000/- to 70000/-. It is cheaper to install this BDST, saves the trouble of cleaning the tank manually which is done by men, risking their lives, polluting the atmosphere and neighbourhood creating health hazards in the process. This also helps Bhoomi Devi by not making her unclean.

The need of the hour is to, MAKE IT MANDATORY BY CREATING PUBLIC AWARENESS.
