SELF SUFFICIENCY IN WATER POSITION @ NALLAMNAAYAKANPATTI

There is this small village near Sivakasi one of the small towns in Madurai district famous for fire crackers called Nallamnaayakanpatti. This town has been perennially suffering from water shortage woes for the past 20 years as the nature of land itself is dry and brazen. The way they sought to solve this problem is unique in its own way instead of depending on Governmental aides. About 600 families in that village met and decided to buy and install a water machine with their own collected funds, which would release water to the individual family by swiping a smart card. Once this smart card is swiped and scanned water gets released to the card holder as per their requirement like cash out of ATM machines. Later, it was felt that this way of filling up of water led to shortage of water as there was no maximum number of pots fixed.  In order to overcome this situation they rationed the quantity of water per smart card and family, which brought about self-sufficiency amongst the villagers. This rationing of water to the individual families in the village allowed them to supply the excess stored water to their own health centre, school and library. Owing to the water scarcity prevailing over many years, the people in this village not once protest, strike or showed their displeasure by coming on to the streets with empty pots, instead in unison and like-mindedness sought to find a permanent solution to the problem with their own funds instead of depending on Government. The highlighting feature is that, when they swipe the smart card in the water machine, the water that they get is at FREE OF COST.
