WORK IS THE “ONLY SOLACE”
“MAY DAY” being “INTERNATIONAL WORKERS’/ LABOUR DAY”, the concept from the West, for those who were in bonded labour, had this one day’s respite. The Labour Day annually celebrates the achievements of the workers. While the day has different story for different countries, the main reason for Labour Day is unfair treatment of the labour class. Labour Day or May Day is called Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or Kamgar Din in India. It is also referred as International Workers' Day or just Worker's Day. In India, the first Labour day or May Day was celebrated in the year 1923. It was the Labour Kisan Party who had organised the May Day celebrations in Chennai (then Madras).
This write up, is inspired by seeing a friend of mine, having clocked in early in the morning into WhatsApp, which is usually, a rarity. Those of whom, who are very busy, either being in higher position, long hours entailing jobs, the only language they speak is WORK. How can you make WORK, work for you to your heart’s content is the issue here? Neither all our lives are the same, nor the jobs taken up. Each one pursues their passion for work, be it in employment or self-employment, depending on their individual liking, circumstances.
Work is like god, worship, survival, passion, easy going attitude for many depending on their approach. When work is done with passion, you will find it as enthralling as ever and never would you find it very tiresome. When work absorbs all your time, you would never be conscious of the outside world, people in that, passion brings out all the required result. For an auto driver who takes out his vehicle for the first time on any given day, you will find that he does a small Anjali mudra before he starts the auto. Auto is his god, or his work is. He is entitled to be passionate about it at his own level.
Workaholics’ worship the work that they do, it is their life-line, livelihood, bread and butter and beyond that. Never can you equate the work done to the financial benefit that one gets. It operates on a macro level, as to the cost of living, overall economic climate, nature of the work done, position that one is placed in the company. Skilled jobs are paid more than casual ones, higher the managerial, technical skill, the payment is more.
But the fact of the matter is, how passionate are you about your work. Work we all know what it is comprised of, more of routine, mundane, at times very different. What needs to be seen is whatever be the work you have taken up, how are you going about it? You are able to do the work with passion, deliver it on time, are your customers happy? This is what matters at the end of the day. Everyone goes by the content of your work, delivery on time, easy problem solving for recipients’ or people at the receiving end.
Knowledge about the work is more important than the methodology of the work done. When you are fully armed with sufficient know-hows’ half the issue of the work done is solved at that stage. Later comes the way one goes about solving the issue, way it has to be done. Here, I should mention that perfection comes with time spent on the work, practice. We can never be totally perfect, there may be slips, but when the damage is immediately rectified once the flaw is realised, the situation comes within control. It is not only knowledge, work process, but when wrongs any done, after realisation, how the situation can be controlled immediately is the other part of work or damage control process.
Work when felt it is not to one’s liking, they can think twice before they follow their gut feeling and may be a change in the career would help them to achieve what one has been aspiring for. After all, life is live to one’s heart full content. When contentment comes, the willingness to do the work will follow. It is how we motivate ourselves which is the key here. When I get inspired to write on a particular topic, it sits in the corner of my mind, then develops into article. Sufficient research is done to this effect too.
We are all human beings and we are entitled to feel not so enthusiastic, jubilant on some days, that, we can take a break and come back with renewed vigour, energy, to do the work. Psychologically it is also felt that, take a break when the mind is fatigued, not up to doing the work, as the mind would have reached a saturation point, that the motivation to work suffers because of that. TAKE A BREAK. In between work if you suddenly feel so, go for a walk, tea break, or an entirely different area from your work place. This will calm you down and you can go back to your work with renewed motivation. This way the shirking nature, lethargy to do the work, would not be allowed to set in.
When one develops an unknown reason to avoid the work that they have been doing routinely, this is also an indication that they need to take a short break from work, where they can come back as a new and energised person. A break is always good when things go too much over-board. There is a limitation in everyone to take thus far and not more than that. That depends again on each and every individual.
Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, is an inspiration to many who works for 18-20 hours a day. But motivates him, to serve the country, it’s people, to do good always, it motivates him. If you listen to his interviews this is what he has been asked many a time. He does yoga, breathing exercises to charge him up in the mornings and his full day’s hectic activity is taken care of, be it rain or shine, normal working or election campaign day. Inspiration can be taken from him and people in Government jobs who are holding high posts whose main aim and goal is to serve the people only.
To be able to do the work on a motivated continuity, physical exercises, yoga, breathing practices can be inculcated as a habit to see through your days’ work. It is not only how mentally one is prepared to do the work the physical health is very important to do any work, be it at desk or outside. Motivation to do work can be from within or from seeing, listening motivational videos and audios of persons whom one may individually prefer.
In real life scenario, I have been watching an old woman whose only work is to take care of an apartment’s cleanliness, side by side makes flower strings too. I should mention here, all that she does is, when the sun is too much she goes to the shade and when the heat is down she comes to the other side, that is in the evening, where she sells her produce. To this day, I have never seen her stop working, though she has a family she would like to live independently. Hats off to her, for her grit and determination to stand on her own legs at this age too. She definitely must be over 80 or 85 and stays motivated.
To work, work and work we don’t need big CEO’S or bigwigs to take a living example from, we can take them from common people too. It is all how we motivate ourselves from people whom we meet in our lives, stay in it, to inspire us to do, contribute more than what we can, to the society and country. Let us stay motivated, inspired, to do work, as it is the only solace.
IT IS TRUE, WHEN YOU LOVE, WITH PASSION, WHAT YOU DO, WHEN YOU ARE HURT, IN PAIN, REMEMBER THAT WORK IS THE ONLY SOLACE.
WHEN YOU ARE MOTIVATED EVERY BAD DAY CAN BECOME GOOD WORKING DAY, WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL SO ENTHUSED, EVEN A GOOD DAY CAN BECOME A MAYHEM. CHOOSE YOUR DAY HOW IT IS GOING TO BE!!!!
